SPX wins new transit contracts, from coast to coast
Are high gasoline prices pushing more commuters to mass transit? The
American Public Transportation Association (APTA) reports that a surge in mass transit riders has transit systems rushing to meet the new demand.
SPX’s GFI Genfare is right on top of that trend. The leading maker of bus fare collection systems in North America, GFI Genfare won multiple new contracts during the first half of 2008. Together totaling nearly $40 million, some of the larger contracts include
Miami Transit, Florida,
San Diego Transit and
Golden Gate Transit, California, and several contracts from Canada.
The hot ticket in transit for SPX is the GFI
Odyssey Validating farebox system.
“As the cost of gas skyrockets, more and more people are using public transportation in their daily commute,” says GFI Genfare President Kim Green. “As ridership increases, the need for a convenient, easy-to-use fare payment system is even more important. That’s where GFI comes in. With our Odyssey system, passengers can pay their fares in cash, with magnetic fare cards and even use new smart cards that use an embedded microchip that ‘tags’ the farebox.”
The GFI system also captures data on ridership patterns, used by transit agencies in planning service, modifying schedules and routes, and increasing the efficiency of bus operations.
